New FP2020 Web Resource for Rights-based Family Planning

08/03/2017 - 16:00

On International Women’s Day (IWD), Family Planning 2020 (FP2020) joins the international community in celebrating the achievements, strength, and resilience of girls and women everywhere. Today we reflect on global progress towards creating a just and sustainable world -- while acknowledging the many obstacles girls and women still face every day.

How can we empower girls and women to challenge existing biases, achieve their ambitions, and create a truly inclusive, equal world? We must ensure all girls and women, no matter where they live, have access to quality, comprehensive, and rights-based family planning information, services, and supplies.

Today, in support of this goal, FP2020 is launching a new web resource dedicated to rights-based family planning—an approach to developing and implementing programs that aims to fulfill the rights of all individuals to:

  • Choose whether, when, and how many children to have;
  • Act on those choices through high-quality sexual and reproductive health services, information, and education; and
  • Access those services free from discrimination, coercion, and violence.

The pursuit of this demands that that policies, plans, and programs are designed and implemented to respect, protect, and fulfill the rights of girls and women and are grounded in human rights principles, as outlined in FP2020’s Rights and Empowerment Principles for Family Planning.
