In memoriam Lucie Van Crombrugge

23/05/2017 - 14:44

It is with a heavy heart we announce that  Lucie Van Crombrugge (1944 - 2017) passed away Tuesday night 16th May 2017.
After a short but serious illness, she decided this had been the life she wanted to live.

Lucie was one of the driving forces behind the legislation of abortion in Belgium in 1990. After the legislation, she didn't stop her fight for a more liberal law: she was one of the authors of the deal with Belgian Government to reimburse abortion, and untill the last weeks she asked for decriminalisation of abortion.

In 1998 Lucie was one of the co-founders of FIAPAC, where she wanted to join forces of abortion providers in Europe and worldwide. She joined the board for many years, but in 2010 she passed on her responsibilities to younger forces. At the last successful conference in Lisbon she was so glad and amazed her 'child' had grown so big.

Only two years ago, she was awarded with a Honorary Doctorate at the University of Brussels for her activism and work for abortion.

Lucie was a dedicated abortion advocate, activist and counselor, with a warm heart for women and for her colleagues.
We will miss her a lot, but will honour her by continuing her neverending battle for better abortion care.

Nausikaä Martens
FIAPAC Secretary General
